Real Men

It’s shocking how many men have experienced domestic abuse. We have heard so many times “my father hit my mother” or “my sister’s husband hit her for years” or “when I was a kid the lady next door always had bruises” or “our neighbor just moved out after being beaten by her boyfriend”. Sometimes, we even hear that men have been abused by their partner – slapped, emotionally traumatized, stalked and threatened.

There are only two types of men in this world: those who would hit a woman if they had a good enough reason, and those who simply would never hit a woman, regardless of the reason.

Real Men don’t hit women. But how does a man learn to be a Real Man? From excellent role models and education. As the incredible songstress Angelique Kidjo shared on her Charlie Rose interview, “My dad told all my brothers, ‘no man in this house will ever raise his hand against a woman. If you raise your hands to a woman you are out of this family’.”

Fathers, please … tell your sons! And please, teach your daughters that abuse from a man is never acceptable, no matter how hurt or in love a man claims to be.

Thank you to all the Real Men in the world who would never hit a woman – you know who you are, and we ask you to help spread the word “Real Men don’t hit women. Be a real man!”
